and this was me, 18 years ago.
I was overweight and started to have health issues. My blood pressure was through the roof, and I often had debilitating headaches. Looking at my parents (they both were suffering from chronic diseases: my mother had 3 heart attacks, diabetes and a number of other life threatening ailments; my father had a stroke and high blood pressure), I realized that if I did not make changes, that fate would be waiting for me in the near future.
This was my wake up call!
When a friend offered a guest pass to a gym, I decided to try it.
The first 3 months at the gym were extremely painful. I remember I could not walk after my workouts. One day, I could barely walk up the stairs. But little by little, my body got used to exercise. I was very disheartened when 3 months later, I stepped on the scale and my weight had not changed. In disbelief, I decided that I would do whatever it takes to achieve my goal weight.
I began learning about nutrition, fitness, exercise, wellness, and stress management. My weight slowly but surely, began to fall. It took me about 9 months to lose 40 pounds, and reach my ideal weight which I have since maintained for 18 years. I never expected that my new lifestyle would have such a positive effect on me. I feel more energetic, more alive, and ready to face anything that comes my way. More importantly, I gained self confidence and belief in myself.
